When I was a young boy I loved to make all kinds of model kits. I had loads of cars, planes & boats. I even made Revells version of the HMS Victory complete with scale miles of rigging & sails, very hard work for a young lad. Anyway, the kit I always wanted to have was this 1/24 scale airfix Spitfire, but for some reason I never got around to buying it or receiving it as a gift.
On a recent trip to the UK I decided it was about time I bought an example of this kit & this edition is an excellent choice. The inclusion of all the paints & some quality cement means everything you need to produce a professional result is in the kit. I know it's a bit childish for a 42 year old man to be making something like this, but at least this one won't suffer the fate of my childhood models, most got broken & shot down in flames!

What you get in the sturdy sliding tray box is good value as along with electric motor, glue, paints and display stand are the additional parts necessary to build a Mk Vb from the older Spitfire Mk 1a parts that form the basis of the kit. An added bonus, not shown on the box, are the inclusion of alternative decal options and parts to build a tropical version of the Spitfire in RAF or US markings. Younger modellers will need help unless they have some previous model building experience as some cutting and trimming of plastic parts is required. Not a quick weekend project and a fair degree of patience is required for a good result. Experienced modellers can add more details as the basics are all there, including the Merlin engine that is a model in itself. If the instructions are carefully followed what you end up with is an impressively large model that looks like a Spitfire.
