5 out of 5 stars Great model of Lewis Hamilton McLaren   February 28, 2009

Nice model. Major departure from what I know of Airfix model kits - it's all pre-painted with logos applied, just assemble and secure with 5 screws. I've marked it low for durability only because it's more of a collectors model than a toy. The assembly is a bit tricky, more so for younger or less experienced at model assembly, but possible by anyone with use of a bit of patience and care. The only 'instructions' are the exploded photograph on the box, which I studied with the contents on the box before and during assembly. The contents of the box are well packed, each located in its own pocket in a 2 piece plastic box insert.
A few tips for assembly:-
The rear axle needs a very firm click of each of the white axle bushes into the chassis.
Tyres require a firm push onto the wheels, being careful not to bend or damage the axles and suspension. I did this before I fixed them to the chassis.
The rear suspension arms piece has a small pin either side, which need carefully locating into holes in the chassis.
Locating the body onto the chassis needs a firm push all over to locate, whilst trying to keep the front suspension and barge board pieces in the correct positions. It looks like Lewis' arms bind on the inside of the body, hence the firm push.
5 screws of 3 different lengths supplied. I tried to use as shown on the exploded photo, but found the long screw for the rear wing was too long, so swapped for one of the short screws.
The photo shows the front floor piece already located on the chassis - this appears to be an extra piece when you compare the parts in the box to the photo.
My model came with a plinth to mount the car on, but no screw or hole in the model to locate it with.
When finished, an excellent model for display. Detail and finish quality equal to many metal models.

5 out of 5 stars Not a toy.   June 27, 2010

Great collectors' model. I bought this to add to my ever growing Mclaren collection and I must say it fits in very well between my other diecast models. For the price it's a good addition to any fan's display case. It isn't however made from high quality materials but nevertheless looks impressive once easily assembled. Buy for show and not for toy or demanding model kit.

3 out of 5 stars Scalextric Model car badged / boxed as Airfix kit   October 30, 2009

Hornby Hobbies own Scalextric and now Airfix. this "kit" is basicly the 1/32 Scalextric Slot car model of Lewis Hamiltons McLaren rushed out as an Airfix kit to cash in on his championship win. Nice model, but not a true Airfix kit

3 out of 5 stars Airfix - kinda   April 12, 2010

Bought this for our son as an introduction to Airfix having watched James May's TV programmes on Airfix. Unfortunately because it all "clicked" together it didn't give the real Airfix experience. Didn't notice this at time of buying as just thought Lewis Hamilton + Airfix = Happy Son. Does look good when assembled though just would have liked some glue and enamel paint :)

3 out of 5 stars Is it worth making this a model?   April 28, 2009
Mr. J. C. Luff
I don't understand why Airfix are releasing this as a self-assembly model. It consists of only half a dozen components that clip together and then screw tight.

It took me about 10 mins to complete, and that includes dismantling it again because the rear axle didn't clip in securely the first time!

Seriously, if you enjoy self-assembly models then forget this, it's a joke. They might as well just put the completed kit in the box for all it's worth.

Having said that, it does look good so the model itself is worth having. Just don't expect it to give you any enjoyment from building it!
